Through missions, believers obey Christ’s command to make disciples and establish local churches that reflect His glory in every culture.
Obedience to Christ’s Great Commission
Missions matters because Jesus commands us to go and make disciples of all nations until the end of the age. The gospel’s urgency has not diminished. Every generation must take up the call to reach those who have not heard. Global missions is the Church’s collective response to Christ’s command and compassion for the lost.

Encouragement from those we serve
I became acquainted with Baptist World Mission more than thirty-five years ago. As a senior pastor I began inviting Dr Monroe Parker and Dr Fred Moritz, along with missionaries on deputation, to preach and present their fields to our church family. It did not take long for BWM to become our favorite mission boards. The philosophy of BWM is greatly appreciated. They are a servant to their supporting local churches, and their accountability process is impeccable. They help prepare and serve their missionaries from the start to the finish. It has been my privilege to serve on the BWM Board for many years and our meetings are always a great encouragement to the church we meet in, the missionaries and those who serve in leadership. We are thankful to have a small part of our BWM family!
It is an honor to commend Baptist World Mission as a mission agency that is doctrinally driven, while maintaining a steadfast focus on biblical church planting. You will find those who serve with BWM demonstrate a spirit of grace while pleasing the Savior by staying separated from the world. Family-oriented in spirit and practice, BWM exemplifies excellence in serving both missionaries and sending churches. Those who labor under its banner share in a ministry whose aim is to please the Savior. It has been my joy to work with BWM for over 35 years and never be disappointed.
For forty-four years it has been my privilege as a board member to enjoy a “front-row” seat in observing and participating with 31 other board members in the “nuts and bolts” operation of Baptist World Mission. My conviction that every missionary sent out by a local church can benefit greatly by the encouragement, helps, guidance and accountability of a mission board comprised of godly directors and administrators has only been strengthened through these many years of service. I pastored Thompson Road Baptist Church in Indianapolis, and BWM with its expertise in assisting missionaries, along with the caring accountability that was provided through the board’s field directors, provided services for our church that for the most part would have been impossible for our church to have offered. The board members, mostly pastors from churches representing a cross-section of America, with a passion for and vision of world missions, regularly contributes godly counsel and direction to the BWM staff. My commendation of BWM is without reservation to both missionaries considering yoking up with a sound mission agency for the help they will need in the logistics of getting to and remaining effective on the field–and to any local church desiring to draw from the resources not normally available to most churches. BWM has a proven record of excellence in its service to churches and to the missionaries sent out from churches.
I have been aware of Baptist World Mission since childhood, and some of my earliest joys in church were the times when missionaries and mission leaders visited and shared their work. Throughout my life, the Lord used my parents—as well as faithful servants such as the Vanderhoofs, Canedys, Parkers, Moritzes, and many others—to shape my heart toward the cause of missions. It has been both a joy and a privilege to be part of the BWM family since my appointment in 2013. Through these years, I have gained a deep appreciation for the vital role a mission agency plays in ministering not only to missionaries, but also to the churches that send them. The leadership, board of directors, and home office staff have continually influenced and encouraged me in meaningful ways. I remain profoundly grateful for those who have chosen to serve us as missionaries—faithfully supporting and strengthening us as we labor on the front lines of the mission field.
